Free WordPress Plugin Auto-generates Google News Meta Tag Keywords

Last month, Google News announced a new meta tags feature that enables publishers to help Google News to properly categorize their content. In response to this, Alpha Brand Media has created a free WordPress plugin that creates Google News Meta Tags automatically.

As posted by Rudy Galfi, the search engine giant’s product manager for Google News:

We’re excited to announce a news_keywords metatag. The goal is simple: empower news writers to express their stories freely while helping Google News to properly understand and classify that content so that it’s discoverable by our wide audience of users….

Keep in mind that this metatag will be one signal among many that our algorithms use to determine ranking. The news_keywords metatag is intended as a toll—but high-quality reporting and interesting news content remain the strongest ways to put your newsroom’s work in front of Google News users.

The WordPress plugin generates tags that will be based on the terms that the writer has assigned to a piece of content. Simply put, it will use a post’s tags to generate “news_keywords” meta tags.

The good thing about ABM’s WordPress plugin, however, is that doesn’t require setup, and installation is done automatically. If a blog entry doesn’t have tags, the Google News Meta Tag will not be displayed. Users are also limited to use ten Google News Keywords only, so being too tag happy is a no-no.
